Campaign Story

About the project

The unregistered urban slums in Jamshedpur face a constant threat of eviction. The community primarily relies on work in brick kilns for their livelihood. Due to poor school infrastructure and the absence of transport facilities, many children drop out and end up joining the workforce. A lack of awareness around family planning leads to overpopulated households, further contributing to rising cases of early marriage, child labor, and elopement.

Making a difference

The project team has been consistently working to ensure children are enrolled in school and retained. Key activities include regularly tracking and identifying children involved in labor, those irregular in attendance, or who have dropped out of school. Efforts are also focused on improving school and Anganwadi Center (AWC) infrastructure by strengthening and sensitizing School Management Committees (SMCs) and engaging community stakeholders. Additionally, the formation of Children’s and Adolescent Collectives plays a vital role in raising awareness within the community about the issues of child labor and child marriage.

Girls finding their voice and space

Girls finding their voice and space

Adolescent girls in the urban slums of Jamshedpur often grow up without safe spaces to talk about menstrual hygiene or to freely step out and play. Many of them navigate these challenges, with limited access to basic resources and little room to express their concerns. When CRY America’s project team engaged with the community, they began by creating a safe and supportive space through Adolescent Girls’ Collectives. Here, the girls could speak openly, share their experiences, and learn from one another. Over time, the team understood that access to menstrual hygiene products was a major concern. Sanitary napkins were either unaffordable or simply unavailable, and there was no local system to support their distribution.

The girls also spoke about wanting the same freedom as boys. They wanted to play, to be outdoors, and to be treated with dignity. In response, the team conducted sessions on menstrual hygiene and supported the girls in understanding and asserting their rights. With guidance, the girls approached local authorities to advocate for better access to sanitary products. Their efforts led to the establishment of a sanitary napkin bank in the community. What followed was even more encouraging. The girls took ownership of the initiative, working with peers in nearby areas to set up additional pad banks. Today, 4 such centers are being managed independently by the girls themselves, ensuring sustained access for many others.

At the same time, the team supported the girls in exploring sports. Around 120 adolescent girls were coached, and football and kabaddi tournaments were organized. Despite challenges, including difficult weather conditions, the girls participated with enthusiasm and confidence. Their consistent efforts and determination gradually shifted perceptions within the community. Recognizing their commitment, local authorities eventually stepped in to allocate a safe space where the girls could come together and play.
